HER Number:MDV52421
Name:Field system 850m south-south-east of Sourton Tors, Bridestowe and Sourton

Summary

Irregular aggregate field system situated on a gentle north-west facing slope of Corn Ridge. The field system includes at least 3 irregular shaped fields and is defined by a series of 1.5 metres wide and 0.4 metres high rubble banks, which are lynchetted where they lie along the contour. Only the ground plan of the north field is complete, whilst short lengths of the boundary bank defining the other two survive only as buried features and no longer as earthworks. A small triangular enclosed area within the north field does not appear to relate directly with the surviving field system and may represent an earlier attempt to enclose this area. Four cairns and a stone hut circle lie within this field system.

'Corn Ridge West enclosure and cairns'. North of the Lyd watershed on the west flank of Corn Ridge are the slight remains of a small prehistoric enclosure. Little more than half the circuit wall is visible as a low bank together with a single small hut of circa 2 metres diameter. A miniature cairn of 3.0 metres diameter by 0.2 metres high a few metres from the hut may be the site of a burial as may another oval shaped mound of 6.0 metres by 3.0 metres by 0.6 metres high near the lower border of the enclosure.

This monument includes a stone hut circle lying within an irregular aggregate field system situated on a gentle north west facing slope of Corn Ridge. The field system includes at least three fields and is defined by a series of 1.5 metres wide and 0.4 metres high rubble banks, which are lynchetted where they lie along the contour. Four cairns lie within the field system, two are oblong in shape and are attached to boundary banks, whilst the others are circular and lie within the fields. The largest mound measures 6 metres long, 4 metres wide and 0.7 metres high and may represent a partly damaged funerary cairn, which was incorporated into the later field system. The remaining three cairns are believed to be the result of field clearance. The stone hut circle lies within the southern field, is terraced into the hillside and is composed of a stone and earth wall surrounding a circular internal area. The interior of the building measures 2.3 metres in diameter and the surrounding 1.4 metres wide wall stands up to 0.3 metres high.
