Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Milestone (M.S.) 1 mile from Newton Abbot marked on the 1880s-1890s 25 inch Ordnance Survey map. Located on the south side of the road.

Jenkinson, T., 2004-2005, B3195 Newton Abbot to Shaldon (Report - Survey). SDV324041.

Site visit 25th November 2003. Worn pale granite milestone at Penn Inn roundabout, located about 10 metres above the traffic lights at Queensway, beside the wall. Black painted inscription reads From/Newton/1/Mile. The B3195 from Newton Abbot to Shaldon is a narrow 6 mile route maintained at one time by the Newton Bushel Turnpike Trust of 1765. All of the surviving milestones on this route show mileage from Newton.

Site visit 6th November 2022. Early 19th century pale granite milestone near the Penn Inn Roundabout, on the former B3195, a narrow 6 mile route between Newton Abbot and Shaldon. The stone is located at Queensway by the wall, about 10m above the traffic lights. The black painted inscription reads 'From/Newton/1/Mile'.
