Name:Pillow Mound east of Trowlesworthy Warren Farmstead, Shaugh Prior

Summary

A rabbit bury or pillow mound of probable medieval to post-medieval date has been recorded as an earthwork bank by field and aerial survey on a north-west facing spur to the east of Trowlesworthy Warren House. The mound is identifiable on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2007 and visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.

Site viited on 2nd April 1995. Pillow mound within an historic field system survives as a 25 metre by 7 mmetre by 1.3 metres high, flat topped, sub-rectangular mound of soil and stone. A 1.3 metre wide and 0.2 metre deep ditch lies adjacent to the long sides of the mound.

An oblong mound approximately 26.5m long and 7.5m wide is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards and digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2007 on the north-facing slopes overlooking the River Plym.
Ditches up to 1.8m wide are visible along the long edges of the mound.
The mound is probably the remains of a rabbit bury or pillow mound of medieval to post-medieval date, part of Trowlesworthy Warren.
The mound remains clearly identifiable on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2016 and visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
