Full description

(31/05/1989) SX 61197697 Rectangular building foundation.
Turf-covered remains of a small rectangular structure are at SX 61197697, close to the foot of a steep W slope in the lee of Wistmans Wood just to the E of Longaford newtake wall.
The building is terraced into the slope, with three sides clearly visible, the fourth hidden by erosion of the hillside. An interior 5m long and 1.2-2m wide is surrounded by spread banks 1.8-2.8m wide and up to 0.6m high. The whole structure is smooth and sealed by turf; some stones lie inside but no true walling remains visible.
Although of uncertain date and function, this building is obviously of considerable age, probably Medieval. It may have been connected with tinning, although there is no direct evidence in this part of the West Dart Valley.
