Full description

A Bronze Age settlement cluster lies on the north-east slopes of Corndon near Shallowford. Six huts are distributed in a "neighbourhood group". Huts 'a' and 'b' are located at SX69187534 and SX69067534, the other 4, 'c'-'f', are located at SX68907532, SX68837537, SX68837532 and SX68877517. It is notable that field size increases to the south, away from the group. Other details: Figure 28.

West Shallowford Prehistoric settlement on the north-east face of Corndon Down. Cross-banks occur around 6 huts uphill from West Shallowford farmstead which probably formed part of a larger settlement based on the river. A pair of huts below the road are in poor condition. Few stones remain in the wall of a hut of 7.5 metres diameter in the angle of the field walls. Whilst another of 4 metres diameter lies partly buried below a later bank and ditch. Built on to the same reave 240 metres uphill are two fields and a paddock surrounding a much better preserved hut of 5.9 metres diameter with an entrance 0.6 metres wide opening to the south. Northwards another pair of huts are built on the edge of a square field, one of which survives with a diameter of 6 metres confined within the junction of Medieval banks. A double banked passageway seems to lead downhill to the other much smaller hut of 3 metres diameter with its walls still standing to 0.5 metres high. Downhill from these are the slight remains of another hut tucked into the corner of two banks. Other details: Map 17, Site 1.

(14/03/2008) On the gently sloping, north-east lower slopes of Corndon Down, a group of five dispersed hut circles, some within or attached to small enclosures and all associated with the Dartmeet reave system. Described by Fleming (1988) as a neighbourhood group all the huts are within 300m of each other.
SX 6914 7533. Despoiled hut circle with diameter of 8m. It has a level interior and no discernible entrance. Several large rocks of the original wall remain in situ but most appear to have been robbed probably by builders of the nearby post-medieval enclosure wall.
SX 6891 7541 Despoiled hut c.7m diameter, stands close to a field boundary which is likely to be a refurbished prehistoric reave. The north-west side of the hut has been robbed and spread outwards. Level interior, some wall stone survives in situ.
SX 6884 7531 A possible hut platform built into junction of enclosure wall at the top, western end of what appears to be a narrow trackway. The stone has been robbed from the hut leaving an approximately circular level platform of 7m diameter.
SX 6890 7515 A hut circle built from large stones - some in situ. Level interior with some tumble 8.2m diameter stone slabs of internal wall lining remain in situ. The walls are up to 2.5m thick and 0.6m high. The hut is built into the corner of a small enclosure with partition walls defining small plots attached to the hut, all now ruined and spread.
SX 6883 7537 Heavily turf covered circle 3m diameter with low walls spread to 1.8m wide and 0.5m high. The hut is associated with small a small enclosure attached to a refurbished reave. Fleming's Hut B (1988) is an unlikely example.
