Name:Possible settlement south of Hickaton Hill

Summary

A hut circle situated on open moorland. It is in poor condition with a levelled interior and an east facing entrance. The internal diameter is 2.5m with walling 1.4m thick and 0.5m high. The remains of a wall extends for 10 metres either side of the hut but there is no evidence of an enclosure or of fields. This site is on the local list of Nationally Important Dartmoor sites.

Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1977, SX66SE57 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV173621.

(19/07/1977) At SX 67436569 is a type 1 hut circle situated on a flattish area of open moorland at 365.0m OD. It is in poor condition with a levelled interior and an east facing entrance. The internal diameter is 2.5m with walling 1.4m thick and 0.5m high. The remains of a wall that extends for 10.0m either side of the hut but there is no evidence of an enclosure or of fields. Discovered during field investigation.

This site was considered for designation as a Scheduled Ancient Monument during the Monument Protection Programme. The programme ended before the entire list of sites was successfully scheduled so this is included on a local list of Nationally Important Sites.
