Sub-oval and irregularly shaped earthworks of two pits, both circa 22 metres long, and banks, between 5-40 metres long, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.
One of the visible earthworks at SX44646497 partly corresponds with earthwork labelled as ‘Quarry’ on the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map and as ‘Old Quarry’ on the early-20th century Second Edition Ordnance Survey map. An earthwork is also shown in this location on the 2021 Ordnance Survey MasterMap.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as post-medieval or 19th century quarries with associated spoil heaps that had passed out of use by the early-20th century.
The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover.
Ordnance Survey, 2021, MasterMap 2021 (Cartographic). SDV364015.
One of the pits partly corresponds with an earthwork.
