Earthworks of an irregularly shaped pit, circa 30 metres long by 23 metres wide, with a curvilinear cutting that extends from its southern edge, circa 50 metres long by 4 metres wide, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019.
The earthworks do not correspond with any features on the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map, although features labelled as ‘Quarry’ are shown in this location on the early-20th century Second Edition Ordnance Survey map. An earthwork is also shown here on the 2021 Ordnance Survey MasterMap.
They are therefore interpreted as a late-19th or early-20th century quarry with associated trackway that had probably passed out of use by the early to mid-20th century.
The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover of Rapes Wood.

Ordnance Survey, 2021, MasterMap 2021 (Cartographic). SDV364015.

A curvilinear earthwork is depicted in this location.
