Full description
CRF:ST11SE/60 ETC, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV40885.
"great mead pit" marked on os 6" (1969) map. Possibly site associated with ironworking or simply a claypit (crf:st11se/60 etc) (horner).

Anon note in Transactions of the Devonshire Association vol 2 (1868) p.382 states "there is a large heap (of scoria and cinders) at Clivehayes Farm, Churchstanton". Hutchinson in Transactions of the Devonshire Association vols pt 1 (1872) p.49 says "Mr James Blackmore of Clivehays Churchstanton observes that all the extent of Blackdown in his neighbourhood was once worked for surface iron as it was called. At another time he speaks of the pits as being "in thousands". Many of these have been filled in where the land has been reduced to cultivation".
