HER Number:MDV53385
Name:Hut circle or structure in enclosure north of Tory Brook Head, Shaugh Prior

Summary

One of five hut circles recorded by Gerrard (1993) within the western enclosure on the south-west facing slopes of Lee Moor, north of Cholwichtown Clay Works. Ground survey in 2002 cast doubt on this identification; thought to be contemporary or later activity on the site, subdividing the enclosure, rather than huts. The feature is identifiable as a subtle earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013.

Gerrard, S., 1990-2002, Monument Protection Programme. Archaeological Item Dataset., MPP 133411, 18/5/1994 (Report - Survey). SDV277946.

SX 5851 6339 Gerrard's Hut Circle B (?). Simple plan and rubble bank walling type. Interior measures 4 metres in diameter and is defined by a 1.2 metre wide wall standing up to 0.3 metres high. The relationship between this hut circle and the northern stock pen wall is unclear.

Butler, J., 1994, Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities: Volume Three - The South-West, 166-9, Map 51, Figure 51.9 (Monograph). SDV137656.

One of the dividing walls of Enclosure 'A' at Tory Brookhead supports a pair of sem-circular foundations on either side.

Probert, S. A. J. + Fletcher, M. J., 2002, Plym Valley survey (Report - Survey). SDV350782.

(23/05/2005) Only one hut was recorded associated with this enclosure; these features are thought to represent a combination of original and later walls, subdividing the enclosure.

English Heritage, 2005-2008, Prehistoric Survey Information (Cartographic). SDV345521.

Not shown on survey.

GeoInformation Group Ltd, 2010, 1:625 2010 Colour (12.5cm resolution) (Aerial Photograph). SDV346026.

Exact features unclear on the aerial photograph but the stock pen wall has possible huts attached at this location.

NERC, 2013, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) Tellus: South Devon to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX5863 Tellus DTM 01-JUL-2013 to 31-AUG-2013 (Cartographic). SDV361514.

Curvilinear banks are identifiable as earthworks.

Bluesky International Ltd/Getmapping PLC, 2015-2017, 2015-2017 Aerial Photographs (Aerial Photograph). SDV361462.

Visible on aerial photograph.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

Curvilinear spread banks from 2.5 to 3m wide are identifiable as subtle earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013.
The banks define an oval enclosure or hollow up to circa 4m across, abutting an internal division or pen to the west, within the enclosure MDV53383.
The visible earthwork is interpreted as a hut circle of probable Bronze Age to Iron Age date, one of 5 identified within the enclosure.
The hut circle has been transcribed as part of enclosure MDV53383.

Ordnance Survey, 2021, MasterMap 2021 (Cartographic). SDV364015.

Hut circle shown on modern mapping.

Historic England, 2021, National Heritage List for England, 1002553 (National Heritage List for England). SDV364016.
