Name:Hut circle in enclosure north of Tory Brook Head

Summary

A hut circle of probable Bronze Age to Iron Age date is recorded from field investigation and aerial survey as an earthwork on the south-west facing slopes of Lee Moor. The hut circle is one of 5 within a prehistoric enclosure north of Cholwichtown Clay Works.
The hut circle is visible as an earthwork under vegetation on aerial photographs of 1946, is clearly visible as a stony bank on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2002 and is identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013.

Curvilinear banks are visible as earthworks under vegetation.

Hut C. Conjoined plan, single orthostat and rubble bank walling type. Interior measures 7.0 metres in diameter and is defined by a 1.5 metre wide wall standing up to 0.4 metres high. Attached to the inner face of the enclosure and to huts A and D.

A curvilinear bank up to circa 1m wide is visible as an earthwork under vegetation on aerial photographs of 1946, is clearly defined as a stony earthwork on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2002 and is identifiable as a subtle earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013.
The bank defines an oval enclosure up to circa 7.5 m across, abutting or partly comprising the interior of the boundary bank defining the enclosure MDV53383.
The visible earthwork is interpreted as a hut circle of probable Bronze Age to Iron Age date, one of 5 identified within the enclosure. It is abutted to the north by the possible hut circle MDV53384 and to the south by the possible hut circle MDV53387.
The hut circle has been transcribed as part of enclosure MDV53383.
