Site visit on 25th May 1995. The parallel row of pit features continues for circa 200 metres after a break of circa 300 metres and crosses the parish boundary bank onto Harpford Common. These are visible on the Royal Air Force 1947 aerial photograph and are also still visible on the ground. The stretch west of the bank, on Aylesbeare Common has been modified by recent Royal Society for the Protection of Birds nature reserve management works. Most of the pits have been infilled and some of the topsoil has been removed to promote heath regeneration. At a point on the west side of the road where the feature crosses it, there has been exposed a patch of pebbled paving, very similar to that noted further west, in association with 19th century pottery.

Basford, C., 2000, Military Earthworks (Personal Comment). SDV345767.
Pottery associated with pebbled areas appear to be late. Possibly early 20 th century, pre-First World War. Suggests later military activity than Simcoe. Possibly firing positions of a rifle range.
