HER Number:MDV54277
Name:GARDEN in the Parish of

Summary

Walled enclosure to rear of hospital building, and separated from it by a courtyard, one side of which was occupied by a long narrow structure, now demolished, possibly a stable block. [probably a walled garden associated with the hospital; probably a kitchen + herb garden]. Divided into 2 by a cross-wall, which shows at least 4 phases, almost certainly dating from 18c, 19c + 20c. Built largely of poor quality red sandstone, mudstone + breccia. Many stones weathered, despite projecting drip courses. A number of internal raking buttresses could be original. Earliest visible phases bonded with pinkish mortar containing coarse gravel aggregate + numerous fragments of coal indicating postmedieval date.
