During the copper mining boom in the mid 19th century, the Duke of Bedford constructed work houses for the port workers at Morwellham. The design of these houses was in advance of its day.


Gaskell-Brown, C., 1977, Morwellham: An Archaeological Survey, 38 (Report - Survey). SDV344219.

Five groups of four cottages of rendered stone, with distinctive porches and tall brick chimney stacks. Internally each cottage originally consisted of a living room and kitchen on the ground floor with two bedrooms above, and a detached wash-house and earth closet. Converted into larger units in recent years.
