Summary

A line of seven tin pits on a north-east by south-west axis ascend the moderate north-east flank of Shovel Down. The pits average 4.0 metres in diameter and all possess spoil tips on their east sides. Most have been backfilled though the two pits have collapsed so exposing their shafts.

Full description

Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England, 1987-1993, Duchy Farms Project Survey Visit, S. A. J. Probert (Report - Survey). SDV350839.

(11/10/1991) SX65958625 to SX65828615. A line of seven tin pits on a north-east by south-west axis ascend the moderate north-east flank of Shovel Down. The pits average 4.0 metres in diameter and all possess spoil tips on their east sides. Most have been backfilled though the two north-east pits have collapsed so exposing their shafts.
These pits were apparently drained by an adit (MDV54547) at the foot of the slope immediately west of Batworthy Corner.

SX65928618 Site visit revealed a recent ground collapse has revealed circa 6 metres of an adit or horizontal shaft, as well as a number of trial pits in the area.
