(17/07/1990) SX 6972 8010: A leat or drain on the W slope of Hamel Down.
A vegetation-covered, silted U-shaped channel averaging 1.2m wide and 0.3m deep with a slight upcast bank up on 1.4m wide and 0.5m high on the downslope side.
It runs from SX 6976 8002, a ditch between fields of field system SX 67 NE 111, diagonally across the contours to the edge of a stream gulley at SX 6967 8025, a fall of c.27m. It cuts through lynchets of the system but there is no other dating evidence.
Its purpose is unclear: although possibly connected with tinning, the evidence for this along the stream is meagre. It could have collected surface water from the fields and delivered it back up the valley into the stream, thence to the West Webburn, to augment supply to tinning operations in the valley bottom. For leats of this sort see SX 68 SE 156 and 157.
It could also be a simple drainage channel.
Visible on A.P's. Surveyed at 1:2500 with SX 67 NE 111.

Visible.
