Full description
Pye, A. + Westcott, K., 1993, Great Potheridge Farm, Merton. An Archaeological Presentation Survey, 21 (Report - non-specific). SDV11287.
Horse engine house. Built between 1841 and 1866, and is two storeys high, although only the upper floor was accessible (from N). It contains quoins of distinctive off-white marland brick made from local ball clay. The E section at first-floor level has been demolished and rebuilt, probably when the great stable was lowered in height earlier this century. At the same time a large beam which had anchored the spindle, crown wheel and drive-shaft of the horse engine was truncated on the line of an internal wooden partition; originally its E end would have been set within the stable wall. The building has now been converted into student accommodation. Other details: Figs 10,17; pls 20,21.
