Site visit 7th November 1996. Turrent winched from beach by Territorial Army. Moved to East Devon District Council depot for temporary safekeeping. Photograph showing turret being removed from beach.

Site visit: 11th August 1995 by I. Angus (Fortress Study Group), F. Griffith and B. Horner. Second World War Allan Williams steel turret currently resting on beach beside Exmouth Docks. Not in situ but in very good condition. There is no hatch covering aperture in roof for pivot-mounted machine gun in anti-aircraft role. Originally sited at west entrance to docks.

Allan-Williams steel turrets. Pre-fabricated. 199 were ordered by the military, the vast majority being allocated to eastern England. Brackets for light machine guns, light anti-aircraft guns and anti-tank rifle. Later mountings were provided for guns in use by the home guard.

The top of an Allan-Williams Turret was exposed by the tide. Less than 200 were made and very few have survived. It appears to have been pushed over the wall by the docks but was probablty sited on another part of the town's sea defences.
