During the 19th and early 20th century paddle steamers made daily trips between Kingsbridge and Salcombe. They also went to Plymouth several times each week. A new quay for steamers, taking advantage of the deepwater channel, was built. Formerly called Bond's Quay, after the owner of the quay and cider store about 1844, who opened the New Quay Inn, now the Crabshell Inn and Quay.
Ordnance Survey, 2012, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV348725.
