Tumulus 'A': Furze covered ditchless round barrow, flat-topped and 0.6 metres high. Situated in un-reclaimed moorland.


Grinsell, L. V., 1970, The Barrows of North Devon, 129 (Article in Serial). SDV7849.

Visited on 25th May 1958. Boggy moor. Mound broad and flat, diameter 28 paces, height 1.5 feet.

Clearly visible on aerial photograph although the surrounding area, and indeed the barrow itself, appear to have been subjected to 'reclamation' as there are furrows visible across it. Other details: Copy in HER.

Department for Culture, Media and Sport, 1999, Bowl barrow 225 metres southeast of Elworthy Cross (Schedule Document). SDV341968.

Monument includes a bowl barrow on the prominent ridge known as Witheridge Moor. One of a group of four barrows surviving as a circular mound 28.8 metres diameter by 0.7 metres high. The surrounding ditch survives as a buried feature approximately 5 metres wide. Other details: Monument 32209.

Two Bronze Age bowl barrows on Witheridge Moor, part of a group. This western barrow is 28.8 metres in diameter and 0.7 metres high.


Payne, S., 2011, Farm Environment Plan Survey Visit (Personal Comment). SDV348588.

Site visit to Witheridge Moor to survey targeted areas for Farm Environment Plan. Survey revealed the barrow was not in good condition. Some scrub on top and animal burrow damage. Also, according to the site manager, a small 'latrine' was dug into the south side in 2011 by 'travellers' parked in a lay-by at Five Crosses.
