Full description

Wall, J. C., 1906, Ancient Earthworks (Article in Monograph). SDV341465.

A tumulus lies to southeast side of West Catkill and east of Catkill Cross.


Grinsell, L. V., 1970, The Barrows of North Devon, 127 (Article in Serial). SDV7849.

Visited 21st May 1962. Under grass. Diameter 28 paces, height 6.5 feet approximately.

A bowl barrow, 26 metres in diameter and 1.9 metres high, in a low lying area of poorly drained pasture. This situation is common to many of the North Devon barrows. Forty metres to the east-north-east is an amorphous mound, roughly 18 metres across and 0.4 metres high; a doubtful barrow, but noted for record purposes only. Other details: Plan.

Round barrow, 6 feet high, 90 feet in diameter, covered with rough grass. In pasture field. The ditch appears to have been ploughed out on all sides except the west side where a hedge protects the perimeter of the monument. Other details: Monument 992.

Site visit 16th August 1995. Western of two round barrows. Diameter 24.6 metres, 1.47 metres high.


Department of National Heritage, 1997, Two bowl Barrows 100 Metres East of Catkill Cross (Schedule Document). SDV343318.

One of two bowl barrows situated on a spur between two unnamed tributaries of the Little Silver Stream. This western barrow has a diameter of 24.6 metres and is 1.47 metres high. The ditch from which material was quarried during the construction of the mound survives on the western side as a 1.1 metre wide and 0.4 metre deep hollow. Elsewhere it is preserved as a buried feature. A small crescent shaped portion has been cut from the southern side of the mound as a result of the construction of a building which itself is no longer extant. The eastern barrow lies 27 metres away. Other details: Monument 28604.
