Old (Eastern) Engine Shaft at Wheal Thomas/Watson mine is shown on the 19C maps. The survey in 2002 found the shaft depression 4m long x 2.5m wide x 0.8m deep with a granite marker post at the eastern end. The 1857 lease map suggests a flat rod to the shaft & a long depression may represent the angle-bob pit. Spoil heaps are located to the south & west of the shaft with a revetment wall at the foot. To the west of the shaft at area of prospecting pits centred on SX44007306 worked the Watson's Lode of copper ore from the late 1840s. The pits openings were c 2m diameter x up to 0.75m deep with small spoil heaps mainly to the north. Other details: Sites 380 & 381.
