Summary

A series of earthwork banks and a ditch interpreted as the associated remains of the deserted medieval settlement of Coombe are visible on vertical RAF aerial photographs taken in 1947 and specialist oblique aerial photographs taken in 1986, to the south of Combebow Bridge, Bridestowe. The settlement of Coombe is shown in this location on the Parish Tithe Map and has been completely abandoned by the early 20th century.

A series of earthwork banks and mounds are visible on aerial photographs (p1&2) and were digitally plotted as part of the National Mapping Programme. There are a number of linear features, in all probability field boundaries, and two subrectangular enclosures, both c18m x 14m. These, and an irregular grouping of mounds to the immediate west, are likely to be the remains of an abandoned settlement. The features lie within an area classed as medieval enclosures in the Historic Landscape Characterisation for Devon and are likely to be medieval in origin.

The earthworks transcribed during this survey most likely relate to the former settlement of Coombe, first shown in this location on the Parish Tithe Map of the mid 19th century and completely abandoned and cleared by the time of the Second Edition Ordnance Survey map of the early 20th century.
