A Second World War military site (Dispersed Site 6) for accommodation for RAF Exeter is visible as a range of structures on aerial photographs of 1944 onwards, to the southeast of Lower Southwood. The former site occupies an area of approximately 1.14 hectares of fairly level land within two adjoining agricultural fields on the southern side of an un-numbered road, from which the site was accessed. The site, which lies approximately 1.5km to the east of the main airfield site, is characterised by a number of nissen huts, pitched-roof structures and a number of possible sewage tanks. There are also a number of other such dispersed sites within the immediate vicinity, for example, Dispersed Sites 8 and 5 to the west. By 1966, the site has been completely dismantled and cleared, and the fields reverted back to agricultural use.
