BIRD + HIRST, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV221965.

Brimpts north mine mill. Built of coursed granite moorstone, the internal dimensions of this 1850-55 wheelpit are 7.6m by 1.6m at the present surface level, which is below the original, several courses having been tipped into the pit to make it safe for livestock. One of the large stones new in the pit has a 50mm hole drilled through it for a bolt to anchor the wheel or stamps machinery. When advertised for sale in mining journal in june 1852, the wheel was described as of 25' diam by 4' breast (7.5 by 1.2m), but a report of march 1852 only described it as 24' by 3.5'. Since the end walls slope back slightly, the original length of the pit at axle height might just have been enough to permit a 25' wheel (bird + hirst).
