Historic building recording and archaeological monitoring and recording were undertaken during the extension of an industrial building at the premises of Supacat, Dunkeswell, Devon. The investigations were carried out by AC archaeology and commissioned by XL Planning Ltd on behalf of Supacat.
The buildings that were demolished comprised a group of interlinked structures representing a Second World War crew rest room associated with Dunkeswell Airfield. Internally the building would have contained aircrew rest rooms and flying kit locker rooms. The investigation found that the buildings retained their primary structures (walls and roofs) and many primary windows; however, no primary internal fixtures or fittings remained and the majority of doors had been replaced in the late 20th/early 21st century. The demolition of the buildings took place between October 2023 and June 2024.
The monitored groundworks exposed no archaeological features, deposits or finds, and there was no evidence for iron ore extraction as recorded in other locations within the airfield.
