Name: | Ruined building between Cox Tor and Roos Tor |
---|
Summary
The remains of a small rectangular building, possibly a tinner's hut. The structure measures 4.2m by 3.7m to 4m overall, with spread walls composed of small to medium size stones (up to 0.2m diameter). Parts of all four walls are extant as low, rubble lines 1m wide and up to 0.30m high externally. There has been some disturbance at the south-east corner. The interior is marked by a slight depression of 0.10m, with a maximum area of 2.6m by 1.7m. No entrance is visible. The date and purpose of the structure are uncertain. There is abundant evidence of stone splitting and cutting in the extensive clitter between the two tors, especially north and east of the structure: It could have formed a shelter for quarrymen but is more likely to have been a tinners hut connected with extraction further up the slope of Roos Tor.

(18/11/1980) At SX 53717653 on the lower north-east slope of Cox Tor at 364m OD is the scant remains of a small rectangular building. It measures 2.0m. by 3.2m. internally with rubble walling 0.7m. wide and 0.3m. high and has no visible entrance. The small size, shape and condition suggests it was a shelter or shepherd's hut of Post Medieval date.
Surveyed at 1:10 000 and at 1:2500 for AO records (1:2500 plan with SX 57 NW 33).

(23/11/1987) SX 5371 7654. The remains of a small rectangular building, possibly a tinner's hut, are situated on sloping ground at the base of the dip between Cox Tor and Roos Tor.
The structure is rectangular, measuring 4.2m by 3.7m to 4m overall, with spread walls composed of small to medium size stones (up to 0.2m diameter). Parts of all four walls are extant as low, rubble lines 1m wide and up to 0.30m high externally. There has been some disturbance at the SE corner. The interior is marked by a slight depression of 0.10m, with a maximum area of 2.6m by 1.7m. No entrance is visible.
The date and purpose of the structure are uncertain. There is abundant evidence of stone splitting and cutting in the extensive clitter between the two tors, especially N and E of the structure: It could have formed a shelter for quarrymen but is more likely to have been a tinners hut connected with extraction further up the slope of Roos Tor (see SX 57 NW 135).
