Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, Untitled Source (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV24.

Vis=10/11/1980 (os) centred at sx52767571 is a group of 13 cairns, situated at about 384m od on a very slight slope in an area of bracken. They are evidently the group referred to by tda, being about 84m.(250ft) below the tor plateau. Grinsell has incorrectly assigned the cairns to the large ring cairn on the top.

At sx531760. Around cox tor; a group of small cairns probably the stone heaps (osa=sx57nw39), mentioned by breton, 1912 (nmr, citing pdas).

NMR, CITING OS, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV269981.

Seven of the cairns are circular, between 3.8m and 9.2m in diam and from 0.3m. To 0.4m. High. Six are elongated, or have been excavated or damaged to produce this form; generally it is 6m by 4m and 0.3m to 0.4m high. One at sx52797569 has a slit trench dug against its ne side. Each cairn is constructed of small stones with no specific features. The area is clear of stone, save for a very few large boulders, though numerous hummocks may conceal other stones. For sepulchral cairns their close proximity, all within 1.5ha. , is exceptional for dartmoor, and the impression is that of field clearance heaps although so far as can be seen there is no prehistoric field system in the immediate vicinity and no evidence of later ploughing. No reason is given why 5 were considered sepulchral when nothing was found in the 2 excavated. The 3 cairns of large diam might be acceptable in isolation but there seems little reason to discriminate within the group (nmr, citing os).

NMR, CITING WILSON-NORTH, Untitled Source (Report - Survey). SDV269982.

Vis=10/7/1991 (rchme) at sx52767571. An irregular system of field clearance cairns on sw-facing slopes at 345m od. As described by os, but with a few additions (nmr, citing wilson-north).
