Des=parish checklist/south brent. Des=worksheet/parish file. 'Meynell's Bank', Western Whitebarrow. Situated on the south slope of Western Whitebarrow between that hill and quickbeam hill. A reave-like bank extending about 320m north-south forming the parish boundary. Crossing notes that this reave was thrown up when an attempt was made to enclose Brent Moor, but was resisted by the commoners.
Vis=-/11/1978 (robinson, r. ). Meynell's Bank, running from SX 6545 6524 to SX 6546 6484, is a possible Bronze Age Reave. Meynells Bank on Brent Moor runs from the first parish boundary stone south of the Western Whitebarrow, southwards for about 400m from sx65456524 to SX 65466484. Traditionally it was thrown up in the middle of the 19th century by the owner of Brent Moor, Francis Meynell of Brentmoor House in an attempt to enclose the common. However on examination it is seen to fall into three distinct sections, only the middle length being substantial enough to seem a 19th century artefact. The two end sections seem much more like a Prehistoric reave and it is possible that Francis Meynell began to rebuild an existing bank and only completed a short stretch. Sketch and detailed description given on worksheet.
