Full description

Robinson, R., 1978-1985, Ugborough Parish checklist (Worksheet). SDV141520.

Field enclosure length 78 metres, width 27.4 metres at 335 metres OD. Sited on the hill between East and West glaze, about 91 metres south of the cairn which stands on the summit. Rectangular in shape the south-east side has the appearance of a low reave; other sides are detected by lines of small stones and a slight elevation of the ground.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1979, SX66SE114 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV142297.

(02/05/1979) On a south-east facing slope at SX 66366126 is a rectangular-shaped enclosure measuring 100 metres by 35 metres. The walls are low, spread and ruinous, up to 1.5 metres thick and 0.3 metres high, and have been entirely destroyed on the east and north-west sides. There is no obvious entrance; the interior may have been cleared but the hillside is relatively rock-free. Found during field investigation.
Surveyed at 1:10 000 on PFD.

Large rectangular enclosure of 112 metres by 34 metres. The surrounding bank is a typically prehistoric type of construction of double slabbed wall with rubble infill. Though now only 0.3 metres high and badly eroded with few stones in place it was probably never substantial and the slightly curved east wall has almost gone. The flat interior is undivided and there are no associated hut circles so its function is uncertain.

Riley, H., 2021, Archaeological Survey: Ugborough Premier Archaeological Landscape, Harford and Ugborough, 9, 7.1.3, Figure 8 (Report - Survey). SDV364697.

A large rectangular enclosure 110 metres by 40 metres defined by a spread stony bank with a rounded east end, occupies the ridge between the West Glaze Brook and the East Glaze Brook. The entrance is oriented towards the Corringdon Ball chambered cairn. The enclosure has no absolute dates but has parallels with long mortuary enclosures which are generally associated with human burials dated to the Early Neolithic and Middle Neolithic periods (circa 3200-2500 BC). Most of these sites occur in eastern England but a site on Challacombe Common, on the western edge of Exmoor has recently been identified as a probable long mortuary enclosure.

Not shown on modern mapping.
