HER Number:MDV57415
Name:Tinners' building built into longhouse, Merrivale newtake, Dartmoor Forest

Summary

Tinners' building inserted into the south-eastern end of an earlier longhouse. Interior measures 7.2 metres by 3.6 metres and its rubble wall stands up to 0.7 metres high. The size of this structure, together with its proximity to a blowing mill strongly suggests that it may be a tinners' building which made use of an earlier building. Reuse of longhouses in this manner is known both on dartmoor and neighbouring Bodmin Moor.

Full description

Gerrard, S., 1990-2002, Monument Protection Programme. Archaeological Item Dataset., MPP 143932 (Report - Survey). SDV277946.

(16/11/1994) Tinners' building inserted into the south-eastern end of an earlier longhouse. Interior measures 7.2m by 3.6m and its rubble wall stands up to 0.7m high. A 2.5m long by 2m wide and 0.5m high pile of large stones lying within the north-western part of the building may be the result of field clearance. A further 0.3m high mound of rubble against the northern wall of the building may be the result of collapse. Two short lengths of rubble walling lead from the north-west and south-west corners of the building, though their purpose could not be established. The size of this structure, together with its proximity to a blowing mill strongly suggests that it may be a tinners' building which made use of an earlier building. Reuse of longhouses in this manner is known both on dartmoor and neighbouring Bodmin Moor.

Much of the wall of the longhouse has been demolished in order to reconstruct the southern room, probably by the tinners themselves. The rebuilding, curiously curved at the northern end, has itself crumbled, choking the interior with a pile of rubble.
