Brig 'mary ann' of exeter foundered off northam on 24/11/1833. Lifeboat 'assistance' attended, but crew drowned before she arrived. Some hours later, when movements in the brig's rigging suggested that someone had got back on board, the lifeboat wern out for a second time, manned by a fresh crew. The movements proved, however, to be a piece of flapping canvas. While this was being observed at close quarters the assistance was capsized by a huge wave, and 2 crewmen, who had lashed themselves to their thwarts, were drowned. A third kept his head above water in the upturned boat and was still alive when it washed ashore (larn, 1974).
