HER Number:MDV5810
Name:Pound or enclosure on Dockwell Ridge, South Brent

Summary

Bracken covered, near circular, enclosure, the apparently featureless interior of which measures 46.0m in diameter. It is formed by a largely turf covered bank of medium and small size stones. The original width of this is difficult to assess; the tops of some non-opposing facing stones suggest it was probably about 2.3m, but it has collapsed and spread to an overall 7.0m with a maximum height of 1.1m. There is no clearly defined entrance but in the north west there is a 1.0m wide gap where the bank is barely 0.3m high and a similar one, 2.0m wide, in the north east. The inherent strength of the structure suggests a pound rather than a domestic or agricultural enclosure.

(06/07/1951) At SX 69266415 a fairly well preserved, stirrup-shaped enclosure. The bank varies in height from 0.25 metre to 1.0 metre and is about 5.5 metres in width, and is strongest on the north-west side.
