HER Number:MDV58421
Name:Enclosure with hut on north side of Hound Tor Down

Summary

Small enclosure with central hut, 30 metres north-west of Hound Tor farmstead. The hut sits on a terrace formed by an arced natural escarpment to the west, the rim of which has vestiges of a stone wall in places. Defining the eastern edge of the levelled area, a much tumbled wall survives as a slight stony lynchet. Together, these features may be interpreted as an approximately triangular enclosure. Overlain by later medieval field boundaries, some of which reuse the older prehistoric divisions.

Enclosure and hut circle SX 74466 79141
A hut circle within a small enclosure, 30 metres north-west of Hound Tor farmstead. This was later incorporated into the medieval fields when earth bank extensions were added to the north and western points of the triangle and an additional stone-faced wall was built bisecting both the enclosure and the hut circle, though the latter survived. The foot of the escarpment contains a concentration of large boulders which may have been deposited naturally or, perhaps, resulted from a period of clearance in advance of the land to the north-west being cultivated in the medieval period or later.
