Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Milestone marked as 'Okehampton…11 M.S'.

Devon County Council, 1977, Survey of Roadside Stones, Okehampton Division (Report - Survey). SDV348247.

Milestone on roadside inscribed 'Okehampton 11 mile'.

Jenkinson, T., 2005 - 2025, Old A30 Launceston to Exeter (Report - Survey). SDV323480.

Site visits 20th February 2008 and 11th February 2013. Milestone situated approx 1/4 mile west of Crockernwell, on grass verge, on north side of road. In poor condition with damage to top left hand edge. The legend, ' Okehampton 11 Miles' is hardly readable. Dates from c.1760.
The old A30 retains a surprisingly good number of milestones set up at various times by the three Turnpike Trusts that managed it. The first six miles of the old A30 in Devon as far as Combebow came under the remit of the Launceston Trust. The road then passed to the Okehampton Trust who managed a lengthy stretch as far as Crockernwell where it became the responsibility of the Exeter Trust. The style of milestones for the three Turnpikes are quite different and range from the tall, distinctive gable-ended Launceston marker, to the characteristic large Okehampton tombstone and the smaller Exeter version.

Ordnance Survey, 2025, Mastermap 2025 (Cartographic). SDV366286.

Milestone (MS) marked.
