Trinity Street had been depicted devoid of housing on a stylised plan of 1584.

Trinity street and its northward continuation Queen Street were originally called Back Lane, and made a junction with Boutport Street. In 1694 8 properties were listed in Well Street (the west continuation of Silver Street). By 1704, some 73 houses and 44 gardens were recorded in 'Well Street and Back Lane'. This rapid development is probably associated with the cloth industry.

Queen Street, formerly known as Back Lane. The area may have been developed by the late 17th century although Back Lane was not recorded in local taxation listing until 1700.
