Gefion. Norweigan merchant steamer torpedoed 1917. Penarth to france in coal (nmr).

Gefion - torpedoed and sunk by german submarine while on passage penarth to n coast of france, sank 10 miles ne of berry head. Built: 1914 by bergen mek. Vwarks. War risk (nmr, citing larn).

10-jun-1984 examined in 50 30 04n 003 15 12w. Swept clear at 22.8m foul at 23.1m. Least depth 23.1m in a general depth of 32m, no scour, height 6m. Broken sections evident, but wreckage seems confined in one main contact with overall length 100m, lying 084/264 degrees (nmr, citing hydrographic office).

19-feb-1960 position 50 30 05n 003 15 09w 182 degrees 55 mins 10.66 miles from sidmouth ch clear sweep at 11 fathoms least water 12 fathoms lies in 18 fathoms.19-feb-1960 position 50 30 03n 003 15 09w depth over wreck 12 fathoms wreck above seabed 31 feet.22-apr-1970 lies on starboard side about 1000 tons gross bow damage.02-oct-1979 definitely the gefion. Identified by engine number, wreck broken in several places. Forepart and centre section lying on port side at 90 degrees.09-feb-1983 wrecks shown in 50 29 50n 003 15 14w.(see kingfisher chart k(sw)2, 1982).
