Full description

Greeves, T. A. P. + Passmore, A., 2000, Upper Merrivale Tin Blowing and Stamping Mill, Dartmoor. Excavation - Interim Report 5, 2 (Report - Excavation). SDV262301.

A stone weir set diagonally across the River Walkham (on a north-south alignment) a short distance below Mill B. It is approximately 15 metres in length and 3 metres wide, and has two visible mortarstones built into it. One of these mortarstones, located beside the riverbank, appears to mark the take-off point for a leat that has been traced as an earthwork as far as the Shillapark enclosures and onto some of the pre-19th century tinworks at Wheal Fortune about 1 kilometre downstream.
A drop of nearly 1 metre was recorded between the top and downriver side of the weir. The presence of mortarstones indicates that it clearly postdates a phase of stamping at the mill complex, and may postdate the last use of Mill B, and partly explain the absence in the latter of a riverside (east) wall – the stone having been robbed for the construction of the weir.
