Full description

Wessex Archaeology, 1998, A30 Honiton to Exeter Improvements, Devon 1996-8: Proposals for Archaeological Post-excavation: Part III, 5-9 (Report - non-specific). SDV338771.

A series of timber stakes and one larger wooden object recorded in the flood plain of the Otter centred on above NGR. Predominantly buried under alluvial deposits. Observation and recording constrained by weather and health and safety considerations. However, some of the stakes may represent the remains of a leat or possibly a sluice structure to help drain water meadows (an apparent faced stone structure was observed at Vine Water diversion). Over 100 timber fragments were recorded from the Otter, of which 3 may be planks and 80 are stakes. Samples taken for species identification.

Exeter Archaeology, 2002, Archaeological Assessment of a Proposed Development at Feniton Mill, Feniton, 7 (Report - Assessment). SDV338788.

Series of timber stakes of indeterminate function were recorded adjacent to and within the Vine Water channel during the construction of the new A30. They were radiocarbon dated to 1430-1660 AD.
