HER Number:MDV61310
Name:Southern of two cairns 790m north-west of Statts Bridge

Summary

The southernmost of two cairns 790m north-west of Statts Brook on the crest of a short ridge of unenclosed moorland. It measures 7.9m north to south by 8.6m and stands 0.65m high. An amorphous hollow, 0.15m deep, lies north-east of centre. The steeply sloping sides of the cairn, sheared by peat cuttings, display the stoney interior; this has been interpreted by Butler (1991) as vestiges of a retaining kerb. The cairn lies in an extensive area of surface peat cutting now covered by heather.

Assycombe Hill S. cairn '1' at SX66258166 of 8.0 metres diameter by 0.5 metres high. Southern of two cairns on the summit of the ridge 400 metres to the south-west of the Assycombe Hill South hut circle settlement. A few slabs of retaining circles are visible around their edges and shallow central depressions tell of some unrecorded investigation. Both have a single stone set at right angles outside the perimeter.

The monument includes two round cairns aligned north-north-west to south-south-east situated on a gentle south east facing slope overlooking the Walla Brook. The southern cairn stands up to 0.8 metres high and is 8.6 metres in diameter. A 3 metres long, 1.5 metres wide by 0.3 metres deep hollow in the centre of the mound is the result of an early undocumented investigation.
