(SX 6930 8822 Wallandhill) There are the remains of a chapel-of-ease at Walland Hill.
Rawson, J., 1920 - 1921, The Chapel of La Wallen, Gidleigh, 129-130 (Article in Serial). SDV242288.
There were two chapels of "la Wallens", one in Throwleigh parish, the other in Gidleigh.
A chapel, dedicated to the splendour of the Virgin Mary, at Wallen in the parish of Throwleigh was founded in 1332 by Richard de Chageford. This chapel existed in its own right and was not the Parish Church of Throwleigh (citing Hingeston-Randolph. The Register of Bishop Grandisson. p 495). Traditionally the site is on Wallandhill where a building, known as the Chapel Barn, is supposed to occupy the site. The discovery of human burials in the hillside suggests a chapel graveyard.
Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1974, SX68NE2 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV275217.
(04/07/1974) There is no evidence of reused dressed stone in 'chapel barn' (SX 6929 8819). The field centred SX 6923 8826 is known as Chapel Park (Hingeston-Randolph. The Register of Bishop Grandisson. p 495).
