Full description

Greeves, T. A. P., Untitled Source (Worksheet). SDV69961.

In 1852 a licence was granted to erect "one burning and smelting house within fernhill wood". Structure still survives. Remains of flue can be traced running uphill to the stack at sx55235946 (greeves).

Earthworks probably associated with the “burning and smelting house” referred to by the above authority are visible as a series of terraces and pits on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. The visible earthworks correspond closely with features depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition map, which also include a wheel pit (MDV61757).
The visible remains were probably operated as part of Wheal Sidney tin mine
