Summary

Vis=22/6/1995 (keystone) ivy cottage, near bremridge, sandford. Possibly smallest medieval hall house surviving in devon. Cob built, 2 bays long, with single bay hall at e end (with sooted roof structure). The w end bay contains an entrance lobby in front of a small service room, below the first floor chamber, which has ladder access from the hall. The bays are divided by a full height closed truss, infilled with large framing above a plain plank and muntin screen. Truss is side pegged jointed cruck, carrying 2 sets of trenched purlins and a ridge. Nearly all common rafters survive. Screen has doorway from entrance lobby towards s (front) end, and doorway into service room alongside. Small plain doorway in large framing towards n (rear) end provides access to chamber. Crosswall recorded with long section. Dendrochronological analysis provided a felling date of 1538-58 (keystone).
