ELDER DEMPSTER FLEET LIST 21852 - 1962 BY M.H.SMYE 1970, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV125140.

Glasgow registered steamer, belfast to st. Helena in potatoes, hay + straw, torpedoed and sunk by german submarine ub80, 1918. Sunk 10 miles sw 0.75 w from berry head. Boma was a steel vessel, screw driven, two decks. Built by naval construction and armaments co ltd, barrow, yard no.171 for the british and african steam navigation co ltd in 1898.240 nhp and 11-12 knots. Vessels no.96090. Captain of ub80 was kapitanleutant max viebeg.(elder dempster fleet list 21852 - 1962 by m. H. Smye 1970).

18-feb-1960 position 179 degrees 40 mins 8.57 miles from sidmouth ch. Least echo sounder 12 fathoms lies in 16 fathoms. Position 50 32 08n 003 14 12w wire drift sweep general depth 16 fathoms least echo sounder 67 feet seabed hard with fine sand covering. Clear at 57 feet foul at 60 feet length 300 feet lying about wnw/ese with shallowest point slightly towards the e end from the centre.22-apr-1970 confirmed as the ss boma, very badly broken up, wreckage together. Salvage in progress.09-feb-1983 wreck shown in 50 32 10n 003 14 10w.(kingfisher chart k(sw)2, 1982).
