Summary

Stone hut circle forming part of a prehistoric settlement 350 metres north-west of Yellowmeade Farm. Diameter 7m. Single orthostat wall 1.9m wide, 0.65m high. The above dimensions relate to the original form of the hut. In later years it was converted by the addition of a rubble bank wall with an annex and a straight porch denoted by 0.7m wide and 0.3m high rubble bank. A very complex structure displaying chronological depth.

Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1950, SX57SE15, Hut M (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV271768.

(16/11/1950) The following huts were found in addition to those previously shown. SX 5651 7449. Given the letter 'M'. Double-walled type. Hut measures 8.0 metres in diameter, with walls 1.0 metres wide, 0.4 metres high. Condition fair; rather overgrown with turf. The circle is divided into two compartments of unequal size by a low turf-covered wall. The western compartment is the smaller of the two and the entrance to the circle is into the larger section of the south side. The dividing wall projects for 2.0m beyond the wall of the circle on the south side - possibly intended as a wind break for the entrance as the prevailing winds are south-westerly.

Yellowmeade Hut Circle '5' of 7.1 metres diameter has been reduced to a smaller building completely enclosed within the upper eastern half. At least five slabs remain of the original outer wall to the west and it has an entrance on the south side.
