Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1974, SX68NE33 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV237864.

(09/07/1974) The spring is covered by a simple, plain granite-slab structure which is 1.1 metres high.
It has no local tradition (citing resident, Collihole Cottage) and is probably only a domestic water supply.

Department of Environment, 1987, Chagford, 8 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV350463.

(16/09/1987) A well and a spring at Collihole. Butterwell built over a natural spring. Probably 17th or 18th century. Granite. The spring head is enclosed on three sides by large slabs of roughly-squared granite slabs and another slab forms the flat roof. It is open on the south-east side where another slab forms a platform in front. Any shelving that existed around the inside has been removed.
This butterwell, over a spring which still provides water for nearby Collihole Cottage (qv) is an attractive feature of the hamlet which includes two important listed farmhouses.
