A roughly semi-circular shaped pit up to circa 70 metres across was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. A second smaller hollow circa 40 metres across was visible to the immediate south of the main pit.
The larger visible earthwork corresponded with a mixed coniferous/broadleaf woodland depicted on the OS First Edition 25 inch map and labelled as Round Pit. The smaller hollow was not depicted, but was probably contemporaneous with the larger pit.
The visible earthworks are probably the remains of extractive pits that had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century and, partly, were subsequently reused as woodland.
