Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1950 - 1980, SX67SW25 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV234066.

Hut Circle A (at SX6372/6906) is a double-walled type circle in fair condition with diameter measuring 7.0 meters with an entrance to the east. The walls are composed of stones which are partly turf-covered measuring 1.5 meters in width, remaining to a height of 0.5 meters.

Pattison, P., 1988, Report by RCHM (Report - Survey). SDV345866.

Hut Circle A (at SX63697206) has a rubble wall of medium - large stones and boulders defining an internal area of 5.2 meters in diameter. The walling now spreads between 1.4 and 2.6 meters in width and stands an average 0.6 meters high, and is broken by an entrance gap 1.4 meters wide on the eastern side. The entrance gives access into an enclosure, the walls of which abutt the south and eastern arcs of the hut circle. The interior is terraced into the slope by cutting in on the south and building up on the north. There are traces of coursing to the internal wall face, possibly indicating later re-building and re-use.

Butler, J., 1993, Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities: Volume Four - The South-East, 209-210, Map 62, Figure 62.3 (Monograph). SDV337765.

Hut circle '8' on the west side of prehistoric settlement '6' at Deep Swincombe West is 5.3 metres in diameter.

Gerrard, S., 2004, List of Sites Remaining to be Considered for Designation on Dartmoor (Un-published). SDV345444.

This site was considered for designation as a Scheduled Ancient Monument during the Monument Protection Programme. The programme ended before the entire list of sites was successfully scheduled so this is included on a local list of Nationally Important Sites.
