An irregularly shaped pit up to circa 45 by 35 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1971, circa 580 metres north-east of Harestone Cross, Chardstock parish.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey. The pit is therefore interpreted as the remains of an extractive pit, probably a chalk pit of post-medieval to 19th century date that had passed out of use by the late-19th century.
The earthworks were not identifiable as earthworks on digital images visualised from photogrammetrically derived elevation data captured in 2014 and have probably partly been levelled.
