A roughly semi-circular pit was visible as an extensive but subtle earthwork circa 50 by 70 metres in size on aerial photographs of 1971 onwards. This corresponded with a smaller pit is depicted in this location on the 19th century maps available to the survey. The depicted pit is interpreted as the northern extent of an extractive pit, probably a chalk pit of post-medieval to 19th century date, that had passed out of use by the mid-19th century. The northern half of the pit has possibly been near levelled, whilst the southern half remains visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014, albeit largely obscured from view by tree cover.
